Beginner Backpacking: Overnight at Denali State Park

Adventure Club members receive a discount on this trip.

When: Monday, July 28 and Tuesday, July 29.

We will depart Palmer at 9AM on July 28 and should return by Tuesday, July 29 at 9PM.

Where: We’ll meet at the Turkey Red building the morning of the trip.

About the trip: This community adventure is the perfect beginner backpacking trip. Use this overnight adventure to test your gear and learn from the pros!

Participants will adventure with a local Wilderness First Responder-trained guide(s) and head into the backcountry for a uniquely Alaska experience.

Things we'll review during our adventure:

  • How to pack a backpack

  • How to set up a tent

  • Route planning

  • Off-trail navigation in Alaska

  • Backcountry etiquette and Leave No Trace

  • Digging cat holes and proper waste disposal

We anticipate this backpacking trip will be about 10 miles of hiking on a combination of trail and off-trail travel.

Our trip meets in downtown Palmer for a gear review. From there, we will travel 2-3 hours to a local trailhead. Our adventure starts from there.

Elevation gain for this trip varies depending on your desired activity level. You can expect at least 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

Guests can expect to hike for about 5 hours on both days. Plan to carry 25-35 lbs over uneven terrain.

What to bring:

  • Backpack, 45L-60L capacity (we have extra bags available for rent if needed)

  • Rain gear, both rain pants and a rain jacket are recommended

  • Non-cotton base layers

  • Non-cotton mid-weight layer (puffy jacket, fleece jacket or similar)

  • Wool socks

  • Hat and gloves

  • Worn in hiking footwear

  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses)

  • Camp shoes, not required, but can be nice to have a set of shoes to wear during the evenings

  • Medications, we recommend bringing 1-2 days extra

  • Personal items as desired (phone, camera, dry towel, solar charger, etc.)

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but we may need to shift plans for a variety of reasons. Safety is our priority and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out if needed.

Trip Fees:

  • $399 per person

  • $349 for Adventure Club Members
