  • Matanuska River Park 925 East Arctic Avenue Palmer, AK, 99645 United States (map)

When: Wednesday, August 13 from 5:30PM-8PM.

Please arrive at the Matanusk River park between 5:15PM and 5:30PM. We will begin our class promptly at 5:30PM.

About the class:  Learn how to bring creativity outdoors with Field Sketching 101, a guided workshop led by Alaska artist Kate Powers of Artscape Workshops. We’ll explore the fundamentals of field sketching using water-soluble tools to capture the stunning scenery of the Matanuska River Park.

After reviewing our sketching materials and assembling our sketch kits—comprising watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, and artist markers—we’ll take a short walk down to a nearby overlook and practice capturing what we see with expressive, approachable techniques.

This workshop is ideal for individuals seeking to deepen their connection with nature, whether through hiking, backpacking, boating, or simply taking time to observe.

Total workshop time is approximately 2.5 hours. This course is best suited for adult learners and teenagers.

What we will make:
Each participant will create a small collection of nature-inspired sketches using mixed media on watercolor paper. All materials are included for this experience.

Group size: Maximum 12 learners total

Course fees:

  • $65 per person

  • $59 per person for Adventure Club Members

What's included: All workshop materials and supplies: water-soluble sketching tools, watercolor paper, and a portable sketching board.
