Peak Challenge: Hike Mt. Baldy and Blacktail Rocks

  • Mt. Baldy Trailhead 12900 Golden Eagle Drive Eagle River, AK (map)

Adventure Club members can attend this event as one of your free monthly adventures

When: Tuesday, August 12, 2025

Time: 10:45AM-5PM (approximate end time)

Please arrive at the trailhead between 10:45AM and 11AM. We will begin our hike promptly at 11AM.

Where: We will meet at the Mt. Baldy Trailhead.

About the hike and what to expect: We will hike at a moderate pace and stick together as a group. Hikers can plan to stop for water and snack breaks, a lunch break, and photo and educational opportunities along the way. This is an out-and-back route on an established trail. Switchbacks lead up the face of Mt. Baldy, with a short scramble here and there. A wide ridge ascends toward the base of Blacktail Rocks, and then a steeper trail leads up to its peak. The small, rocky summit at 4,390 feet elevation offers 360-degree views (weather permitting) of the surrounding Chugach State Park lands.

  • Difficulty: moderate to strenuous for most people

  • Mileage: Approximately 8 miles

  • Elevation Gain: About 3,000 feet

  • Estimated Hiking Time: About 5-6 hours

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but we may need to shift plans for a variety of reasons. Safety is our priority, and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Trip minimums: We require a minimum of 2 registered participants to run our community adventures. If a scheduled event is canceled due to low sign-ups, participants will receive a full refund or credit towards a future event. Adventure Club members can receive a credit towards future Revel events.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out.
