Community Hike: Matanuska Peak Bowl

Adventure Club members can attend this event as one of your free monthly adventures.

When: Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8AM. We anticipate it will take our group about 6 hours to complete the hike.

Please arrive at the trailhead between 7:45AM and 8AM. We will begin our hike promptly at 8AM.

Where: We’ll meet at the Matanuska Peak Trailhead.

About the hike and what to expect: The Matanuska Peak trail begins with a steep climb through boreal forest. After about 2 miles, the trail arrives above tree line in the upper McRoberts Creek Valley. The valley offers stunning views of peaks in the Matanuska Bowl. We will be hiking the Matanuska Peak trail and the McRoberts Creek trail (old Mat Peak trail) during the hike. Hikers can expect an elevation gain of approximately 2,800 feet over about 3 miles. A picnic table is located in the bowl begins a steep ascent to the Matanuska Peak summit.

Hike fees:

  • Adventure Club members may attend this event as part of their 1 or 2 free, monthly events. Learn about the club here.

  • First-time attendees may attend this event for free. When you register, please select “first-timer.”

  • For all other guests, $12 to join this monthly event. If you are interested in a scholarship, please complete our short form here. Your hike fees help cover guide wages and our permitting fees.

Parking: Please note that participants are responsible for paying any relevant parking fees.

What to bring:

  • Bring layers

  • Bring comfortable boots or shoes to walk in

  • Rain gear

  • Trekking poles (recommended)

  • Water and snacks as desired

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but we may need to shift plans for a variety of reasons. Safety is our priority and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out if needed.
